Route-66 Loop Day 6, Thursday, May 20
Starting Location: Santa Rosa, NM
Stopping Location: Amarillo, TX

172 Miles

Highlights of the day

Saw a fellow try to eat a 72 ounce sirloin steak in under 60 minutes.  He did not make it.

End of the day at the Days Inn motel, there was a British group milling around the lobby.  They are on an arranged tour doing Route-66 the other direction.  When they heard we were on motorcycles, one sweet elderly lady ran out into the parking lot to look at one.  When she came back in, I offered to take her on a ride, but she said she was too timid.  So I asked if she'd like to sit on it and have her friends take photos.  She was thrilled.  I held it steady and she climbed onto the back.  The whole group was standing around and enjoying the scene and taking photos.  Without telling her, I started the engine.  She was totally thrilled.  What fun.  She said that this trip was her 70th birthday adventure.

Photos and Descriptions

C and I started the day with an exploration of Santa Rosa.  It's a nice little town, but sadly, many of the old 66 businesses are long abandoned.

In Santa Rosa is a Route-66 Museum.  This is a fun place with a gift shop and a bunch of cars from our youth.  Ranging from hot rods to nostalgic oldies, they were delightful to see.
Somewhere, some Chevy's are missing their front ends.

There are constant reminders that Route-66 is largely, sadly a thing of the past.

We leave New Mexico and enter Texas

Adrian, Texas is located at the midpoint between Chicago and Los Angelos.
This is a must photo op.  Across the street is the MidPoint Cafe.  It is so slow here that the cafe is open when the fancy moves the owner.
It did not move her this day.

Vega, Texas is the county seat for Oldham County.  We stopped to see the courthouse and an old filling station.

In Amarillo, Texas there is a restaurant and casino that is a tourist trap in itself.  The Big Texan Steak Ranch.
It is huge.  And, they seem to like anything that they can shoot and hang on the wall.
There was a fellow who tried the challenge of eating a 72 ounce steak in less than one hour.
He didn't make it, but he did have a very large doggie bag to take home.
