Myron's Ride To Utah
Day 8, Friday May 27th, 2005

Quality Inn offers free "cooked to order" breakfast from a menu of about 6 choices.
Up, breakfasted, and out of the room at 7:50

Refueled Circle-K
Time: 6:35, Trip: 55.6, Odometer: 24,575, Price: $2.439, Gal: 1.474, Cost: $3.60

Heading toward Bakersfield a little over 125 miles West on Highway-58

A rest area in the desert, leg stretch time.

This is the area that made Ronald Reagan famous...
20-Mule-Team wagons actually drayed borax out from around here.

Time: 8:51-8:55, Trip: 45.4

Little town of Tehachapi.  A good opportunity for a leg stretch.
Not that much to do in Tehachapi but watching the train activities.

Time: 9:35, Trip: 91.9

Bakersfield at last.  First find a county building in front of which
I can get a photo for Kern County.

Looks like a nice enough little town.

Time: 10:25, Trip 133.0

Found the Bakersfield Harley-Davidson, got a shirt.

Time: 10:32-10:47, Trip: 133.5

Gassed up at an A-One Service Center in Bakersfield
Time: 12:51, Trip 134.5, Price: $2.419, Gal: 3.377, Cost $8.15
And now, one of my least favorite highways, 99.
Poor pavement, always seems hot, pot holes, crowded....

Robert S. Raine rest stop, Time: 11:49, Trip: 55.9

I was just getting ready to leave when a couple on two bikes
arrived and parked beside me.  They started in Tulare, about
15 miles behind, and are headed to Visalia, about the same ahead.
We talked for a while.  He was on a brand new Harley, she's
planning to get a new one as well soon.
Departure time: 12:11

Visalia Harley-Davidson.  Missed this guy last year when
I was down in this area.  If you miss the turn-off to get here,
the first opportunity for a u-turn is about 10 miles up 99.
Got two shirts, one was half off -- the price, not the coverage.

Time: 12:32-12:50, Trip 74.4

Lunch in Fresnoat the Jensen Avenue In-N-Out Burger.  M-m-m good.
Time: 1:14-1:35, Trip 106.3
Spent a lot of time riding around beautiful downtown Fresno
Looking for a building with a county name sign on it that
I could park close enough for a photo including my bike.
The sun is extremely hot, I'm sweating like a horse, it's 90 degrees.
Finally found the Fresno County Federal Credit Union.
Time: 2:10, Trip 118.5
Just North of Fresno, I turn West on Highway 152.
I'm going to need gas soon, surely there will be a station soon.
152 is not the most heavily populated area of the world.
I was really getting nervous, tank was running pretty low.
Finally, on Rt-33, Dos Palos Chevron and none too soon
I was down to my last two-tenths of a gallon.
Time: 3:21, Trip: 176.5, Odometer: 24,886, Price: $2.679, Gal: 4.795, Cost: $12.85

This is the last tank I need to get the rest of the way home.

On 152, in Los Banos, is another HD dealer.
Of course, I stop and get a shirt.

Time: 3:52-4:05, Trip 13.5

Upon arrival home, I find that some vandals had perpetrated
their mischief in my front yard!

It looks like the Harley will not be the only air-cooled
machine I will be running regularly this summer.

Home!  Time: 5:33, Trip: 96.9, Odometer: 24,983

Progress for the day: 470 miles in about 9 hours, 43 Minutes
For the entire trip: 2,728 miles in about 62 hours on the road.

Previous Day May 20th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 25th, 26th, 27th
