Route-66 Loop Day 15, Saturday, May 29
Starting Location: Fruita, CO
Stopping Location: Ely, NV

421 Miles

Highlights of the day

Went across the width of the state of Utah and into Nevada.  We left I-70 at Salina and picked up US-50.
We will follow this all the way to Sacramento.  AAA calls this the loneliest road in America.

Both C and I prefer to ride 30-100 miles at a stretch.  Then a bit of a break, see something, and then continue on.
Our routes today and tomorrow are characterized by a series of very long stretches.  None on the shorter side, several much longer than we'd prefer.
Nonetheless, it is beautiful country and we're both very happy we could share the experience of this stretch.

Fruita, Colorado to Green River, Utah -- 90 miles
Green River, Utah to Salina, Utah -- 107 miles
Salina, Utah to Delta, Utah -- 70 miles
Delta, Utah to Ely, Nevada -- 154 miles

Photos and Descriptions

Behind the Fruita, Colorado motel in which we stayed is a monument to the veterans of Viet Nam.

With a day of long stretches ahead, we took the opportunity of a Utah rest stop for a cup of coffee.

The geology of Utah is fantastic.  We stopped at a wonderful example, the Black Dragon Canyon in something called the San Rafael Swell.
There was a woman selling jewelry by the side of the parking lot.
The landscape is truly breath-taking.

We stopped in Salina, Utah and had lunch at a place called Moms Cafe.  It was unusually busy, crowded with people.
We shared a table with a couple who turned out to be from Delta, Utah, our next destination.
The food was good and the company pleasant.

Delta, Utah is the last opportunity to stop before our longest road segment of the trip.
We were also reminded that it was now the Memorial Day weekend.

Across the street from the flags was a restaurant with the best cherry pie C and I can ever remember tasting.
We steeled ourselves for the longest segment (154 miles) of the entire adventure.

An unexpected pleasant surprise.  As we hit the Utah - Nevada state line, we came upon a gas station and motel in the middle of nowhere.
There is no town near and the only possible customers were we travelors or some widely scattered local rural denizens.

By the time we reached Ely, Nevada, we were exhausted.  No energy to take photos.  Now, of course, we wish we had taken a bunch.
We had coffee and a bite in the second floor of a casino/restaurant/hotel.
We experienced strong reminders that the smoking laws of other states are not so strong as California.
