Route-66 Loop Day 16, Sunday, May 30
Starting Location: Ely, Nevada
Stopping Location: South Lake Tahoe, California

349 Miles

Highlights of the day

This was a second day in a row with the long stretches:
Ely, Nevada to Eureka, Nevada -- 77 miles
Eureka, Nevada to Austin, Nevada -- 70 miles
Austin, Nevada -- Fallon, Nevada -- 110 miles
Fallon, Nevada to Carson City, Nevada, 62 miles
Finally, Carson City, Nevada to South Lake Tahoe, California -- 31 tired miles

Along all these segments, there was NOTHING but Nevada.  Empty, but beautiful.

Photos and Descriptions

Traveling across I-50 in Nevada consists of 6-8 mountain ridges each separated by miles and miles of high plains.
On the top of one of the ridges we encountered Toiyabe National Forest.  I get an ABC's point for a photo of a national forest.

In Austin, Nevada is the county seat for Lander County.  A photo and an ABC's point for an "L" county.

By this time, we're pretty weary and have not been real good at taking photos.
I think this is in Fallon, Nevada, but I would not be surprised if I'm not correct.

Carson City turned out to be different than we expected.
It seems like another small town whose best days are behind it with a number of casinos that in themselves did not seem very inviting.
We hadn't planned on it, but we continued on to South Lake Tahoe crossing into California -- almost home.
Being Memorial Day weekend, motel rooms were rare (and expensive) and the streets alive with people.
