2012 Trip Across America

Photos and Notes from Day 9, Monday, May 28

Previous Day
Sedona, AZ to Phoenix, AZ area

Today we are leaving Sedona and heading down to the Phoenix area, Scottsdale to be exact.  In the morning, we will be picking up my bike, Bella, and starting out again on our travels.  Bella has, for all intents and purposes, a brand new engine.  Good/bad.  I will need to go through a break-in period.  This means staying under 50 MPH for the first 500 miles and then getting an oil change.  I don't have facilities to do that myself, so I need to find a dealer about 500 miles away.  That is just about Santa Fe, NM.  There is a dealer in Santa Fe.  I hope to be able to make a service appointment for Wednesday morning.

We are watching the weather across the country.  If things had gone according to the original plans, we would have been on the southeast coast right now perhaps in Savannah.  Hurricane Beryl!  4 inches of rain in Savannah, GA!  Flash flood warnings in the Southeast! Heavy rains extending all the way up to North Carolina.  Random storm-caused tornados. We could have been holed up for a week or so.

The breakdown and subsequent delay we have experienced may not have been all bad (except to my wallet).

We headed down 179 to I-17 then south to the Phoenix area.

We got to Phoenix before check in time at the hotel, so we stopped in at the Scottsdale 101 shopping center, had a little lunch and then watched the Avengers (non-3d).  It was a lot of fun.

The hotel is a Marriett's hotel and quite nice.  Everything about it screams the '70s but it is clean and well kept.  I booked through Expedia and I don't know what the deal is but they gave us a room on the 4th floor.  It is actually a suite.  The ante-room is about the size of my living room and the room with the beds is larger.  Two flat-screen TVs, and a four cushion couch.  I may not want to leave.  Oh, but Bella awaits in the morning.  I will be so happy to see her.

We ate supper in a Peruvian restaurant  Fabulous.  Who'd have thought in Phoenix?

Leaving Sedona does not mean an end to the beautiful geology

It seems that every building in Arizona has the Southeast motif. Homes, businesses, probably even outhouses
