2012 Trip Across America

Photos and Notes from Day 13, Friday, June 1

Previous Day
June is Busting Out All Over

Las Vegas, NM
It is the first of June.  We took a quick departing tour around Las Vegas before hitting the road.

Las Vegas to Springer
The weather was perfect.  Low 70's, a slight tail wind, bright sun with a hint of overcast.  Puffy little clouds here and there as we headed up I-25.

Springer, NM
We stopped in at a little hotel with a cafe in Springer for a snack, I had a cup of coffee and a slice of apple-walnut pie.
Carol had what she described as very good steal cut oatmeal.

Go Springer Red Devils

Hotel with a nice cafe

The lobby

Heading toward intersection with US-56

There are only three gas stations in Springer, each smaller than the other.
From Springer, we turned east toward Clayton in the northeast corner of New Mexico on US Highways-56/412.  Do not ask me why there are two numbers, all along the way there are two signs each with the "US Highway" shield.  This (these?) is a two lane highway all the way that is in decent shape and real pleasurable to drive, but very long. All around is cattle country and hay fields.

Clayton, NM
We had lunch in Clayton in an old restaurant and saloon founded in about 1904.
Afterwards, we walked around a bit and found a museum in an old, converted church.  They had an eclectic mix of wonderful stuff.
Dinosaur footprints, old clothes, old kitchen gadgets and appliances, and most enjoyable, a rich set of local memorabilia.

On the Road between Clayton and Boise City
While we were on the road, the sky on the horizon became more and more ominous.  Not being experienced, we did not know what to expect or to do.  Fortunately, we skirted any real weather.

At the Oklahoma border

Boise City, OK
When we were back in Clayton, I asked the waitress what I should not miss in Boise City.  She thought about it and replied that the most interesting thing was the round-about street with the courthouse in the middle.  When we got to Boise City, she's right.  There's not much "there" here.

I got a post office photo to prove I'd been to Oklahoma this year.

Boise City does have a museum, closed by the time we got there, with a really big steel dinosaur

They also have a tall, tin man.
Who's that fellow with all the gray hair?

We ate dinner in a local place

A terrific little place just like you'd think it should be.  Run by family, dad is the boss, daughter and a local young lady served.

Some down-home and some conservative attitudes are on display here.
