2012 Trip Across America

Photos and Notes from Day 12, Thursday, May 31

Viva Las Vegas!

I called the Harley-Davison dealer in Albuquerque the first thing in the morning.  It has been over 400 miles on the new engine.  At 500 miles of break-in, the engine needs to have an oil change.  They said to bring it by and since I am a traveler, they would fit it in.  They did and were very nice about it.

Left Albuquerque and headed up to Santa Fe.  Everything was going great until we hit a section where they were repaving one of the lanes of the freeway.  The ensuing backup as the traffic merged from two to one lane and then single filed along the couple miles where they were actually working took about 40-45 minutes of stop-stand-roll a litte-stop-repeat.  After finally passing that, we progressed pretty well.

Up until 1937, the old Route-66 went through Santa Fe.  This has always been an artsy town.  Everywhere you look is an art gallery.  The best is the Georgia O'Keeffe museum.  We spent a good deal of time viewing her work.  They rotate the pieces on display.  Everything we saw were flowers, natural landscapes, and photographs of her and her environs.  There was a fantastic photo of Georgia O'Keeffe taken by Ansel Adams.  What a wonderful thing to be able to visit a place like this.

After we left Santa Fe, we headed up the road to Las Vegas, New Mexico.  As we were heading out of town, we noticed that the gas gauge was reading empty.  As luck would have it, there were no gas stations on the way out of town.  Not to worry, about 20 miles down the road is the town of Glorieta according to the highway signs.  Not yet on reserve, we surely could make it that far.

When we got to Glorieta, a highway sign indicated gasoline available at that exit.  When we pulled off, there is no there there.  There is a sign that indicated that there is a Shell down the road 3.5 miles.  It as a two-lane country road through some very pretty, but very rural area.  Bella lit her reserve light and complained about being hungry and we began to worry.  Finally though, there was an old country store with two gas pumps out front.

After gassing up, continuing on this road eventually led us back to the highway and we had an enjoyable ride to Las Vegas.  This is really a nice area to visit.  Overhead were threatening clouds, but they kept their distance.  One area did have standing water on the freeway.  We luckily arrived after a rain shower had passed.

On the Road to Santa Fe

Santa Fe

I got a shirt and pin at Santa Fe HD

Parking in Santa Fe is immpossible.  We went around the block to park in this lot, but noticed a spot small enough only for compact cars.  We fit.

We walked around to see what we could see.

Santa Fe Square

Santa Fe is the state capitol.  I wanted a photo that showed the state name.  Like several other states, the buildings are not labeled with the state name.  I guess they assume you know where you are.

Heading to Las Vegas

We noticed that the sky was getting very pretty.  In this context, pretty can mean ominous.

In our wanderings, we came across the Santa Fe National Forest

We passed the town of Pecos.  This is the area around the Pecos River where the legend of Pecos Bill was born.
