How Many Ways Can You Say Cold?
Well, I think I learned a few new ones today. Leaving Rock
Springs, the temperature was in the low 40's. The forecast was for
a moderate day in Jackson, 56 degrees, so we thought it would be warming
as we went. It did not. We did not prepare for this.
We were heading for Florida. I did not bring any long sleeve
shirts to wear under my jacket. The chaps sort of protect those
areas they cover from the wind, but there are areas where they do not
keep warm. We arrived, the local church choir invited me to try
out for first soprano.
The wind was forecast to be from the west between 20 and 30 mph with
possible gusts to 40. Not good, but not so strong as yesterday.
Since we are heading generally north, the wind would be from the left
side again. This is important because the highway is two lane the
whole way and on coming, large vehicle traffic would be upwind and cause
us to be buffeted. There were quite a few big rigs, RVs, and large
pickups with horse trailers.
It never got above 46 degrees in 178 miles and the wind never let up.
A few time there were threats of rain with tiny drops peppering the
windshield. Thankfully, the threat never fully materialized.
We are here safely in Jackson and are going to spend all of tomorrow
here. Perhaps the weather will be warmer on Tuesday when we leave.
The very cold weather and the wind chill of minus infinity precluded
the taking of pictures while underway. The cameras we have require
ungloved hands to manipulate and that was unadvisable to say the least.
There are precious few stops along the way and we endeavored to take
photos at those.
I found something called Alpine Vistas Lodging on Expedia and it
looked good. When we got to the listed address via the GPS, there
was nothing of that name to be found. There is a large something
called Snow King Resorts. When I asked at the registration desk,
they said this was the right place. We lucked out, it is fabulous. |
