I Don't Believe in Reincarnation,
But I Know We've Traveled This Road Before
We started the day in Median, Idaho and headed west. After a short
while, we crossed the border into Oregon our 12th state for this trip.
Fewer than we planned, but a respectable number of states for one summer
jaunt.
Today's route was exactly as we had ridden one year ago.
Covering familiar territory and less ground each day than last year,
because we have the luxury of time, we were often able to recognize new
and more details as we went along the way.
The east side of Oregon is full of very verdant farm land. We
saw many types of vegetables, green onions, chard, grains, radishes, and
others that we were unable to identify at 55 mph.
The road then takes on a different personality. Oregon has a
number of hilly ridges over which the highway travels. Many of
these reach a height of over 4,000 elevation. For those of you
local to San Jose, that is about the height of Mt. Hamilton.
Actually, these ridges are not all that high relative to the surrounding
areas, but they do have some steep grades up and down and the highway
has lots of curves following the terrain.
We revisited the town of Juntura with one of the smallest post
offices I've seen and a restaurant full of locals who all seem to know
each other. Of course with a listed population of 89, that is very
likely.
We stopped in Burns, Oregon for the night. Tomorrow, we will be
branching off in a new direction, heading to Alturas, California over
roads new to us. |
