Route-66 Loop Day 12, Wednesday, May 26
Starting Location: Salina, KS
Stopping Location: Colby, KS

204 Miles

Highlights of the day

More bike problems.  Right muffler loose.  I tried to tighten it but clamp bolt was at the end of it's travel.
Fortunately, HD dealer within 2 miles.  Stopped there and they put on a new clamp in about 1/2 an hour.  Good to go again.

Day shortened by rain at Colby.  About 2-3 inches in less than an hour.  Flash flood warnings.
Stopped for an hour at a motel, waiting in the lobby to see if it would blow by.
After an hour, we checked in for the night at about 3:00.  A bit later, blue skies and beautiful, bright cumulus clouds.

Terrific Mexican restaurant at the motel.  Taco, tamale, relleno, enchilada, beans, rice, all very, very good for $9.95.
I had a house special margarhita that turned out to be about 16 ounces.  I was happy for quite a while.

Photos and Descriptions

We had stopped in a diner in Russell, KS for lunch.  They had some of the best fried chicken I have ever tasted.
Crispy, not greasy crust and moist, tender meat.  Salad bar, three entrees, including the chicken, corn on the cob, mashed potatoes and gravy, and more.
All you can eat buffet for $7.25.  Need I tell you that many of the patrons we saw were on the larger side?

We stopped in Hays, Kansas since it is one of a few towns in this part of Kansas.
I took a few photos for my ABC's and we explored the town a bit.  Truth be told, I got a bit lost.
Hays has a Harley dealership, Doerflers` HD.  When I found it and C and I stopped in, whom should we run into but RM & K.
They were just leaving as we were arriving so they hurried on their way so that they could spend more time with friends in Denver, Colorado

As we got back to I-70 and continued west, there were ominous clouds on the horizon in front of us.
After a while, it started to rain.  Kansas knows how to rain!
On a bike, the rain runs up the front of the windshield, down the inside of the windshield, and up the helmet face mask.
We tried to continue through it for about 20 minutes, but it was too much and we decided to pull over.

We holed up in a motel lobby in Colby, KS and tried to wait it out.
After an hour, we decided we had gone far enough, we should call it a day and check into the motel for the night.
About 15 minutes later, the rain stopped and the sun came out.  Oh well.

In the motel room next to ours were a handful of men drinking beer out front.
They are railroad men, bridge workers.  They were really nice and offered us some Coors.
I was worried whether they might be noisy as neighbors, but they weren't.  It was great.
