Kingman, Oatman, Seligman, Williams
Today was a great day for tourism. Beginning in Kingman, we
drove to Oatman from the western side. This is the original path
of Route-66 through some extremely rugged, mountainous country.
Oatman is the little town with the wild burros.
From Oatman, we followed the original Route-66 eastward and continued
on I-40 and turned off to drive through Seligmen.
Continuing east on I-40, we stopped at Williams. This is the
"Gateway to the Grand Canyon" or at least to the South Rim.
We got into the old downtown area and they closed off a block for a
street drama describing and old gunfight that took place in 1873.
At least they purported that it took place. The actors were
terrific, real characters each. Outfitted in authentic(?) cowboy
clothes, they enacted the incident two different ways, first as the
local newspaper reported it and then as it actually happened. It
was hilarious. The little drama was light hearted, full of fun,
wit, and charm. They punctuated the little play with very loud
blanks shot from real pistols. |
