2012 Trip Across America

Photos and Notes from Day 7, Saturday, May 26

Previous Day
When we woke up this morning, we were going about our normal chores and preparations (yeah, I was poking at these web pages) when we heard a loud, unidentifiable noise.  Carol looked out the window.  It was hailing.  I guess it's common with hot weather cumulus clouds.

We headed east on I-40 for a few miles to exit 1-95 and then south on Hwy-89A.  This is a two lane highway that runs through the Coconino National Forest.  It is more or less straight for quite some 30-40  miles and then becomes very windy.  The next 30-40 miles of windy road quickly becomes some of the most beautiful roads I have ever been on.  We're talking Yosemite beauty!

The shear rock walls are sandstone rather than granite, but every bit as steep as any road I know of.  This goes on for miles and miles and then Sedona is right in the midst of all this geology.

It is Memorial Day weekend and we have no reservations.  When we got to town, the traffic is bumper to bumper and creeping along stop and go.  We checked a few motels and found that they were full and very, very expensive.  We finally found a place, the Cedars that had one room left.  This room is old, but clean, reasonably well equipped, is on the second floor, had has a balcony with vistas to die for.  Directly behind is a sizable creek and a pathway down to a paved area for sitting.

There is some good news, we are staying here for two nights.  There is some better news, They called and Bella is ready!  Healthy and raring to go.  I will be picking her up on Tuesday, Monday being a holiday.  Yay!

Who would have expected hail after the days of 100 degree weather.

Entering the Coconino National Forest

Trying to capture the awesome beauty from a moving car is very tough.  Carol does really well, but she's better on the bike.

The second floor far right is our room.

Below our balcony is a path down to a creek with babbling water sounds.

Carol and I found it very relaxing to sit and listen to the water and watch the trees sway in some very gusty winds.

Did you see Snoopy?
