Today we head out from Escanaba, visit Marquette |
Places Visited Along The Way, Photos, and Notes |
I woke up in
Escanaba,
MI, had a barely adequate bite at the motel and hit the road |
The day was very nice but a little on the cool side This morning, I prepared and wore two layers of t-shirt and that proved good Also, I put on my new lightweight gloves and turned on the heated grips For the most part, I was a happy fellow Mostly forested, there were also agricultural areas The road, although only two lanes proved nice The scenery was outstanding and the traffic light |
Passed through several wide spots in the road:
Gladstone,
Skandia,
Harvey, And then first sight of Lake Superior |
Just before
Marquette
is a Michigan Welcome Center Very helpful, friendly people |
First stop at
Bald Eagle Harley-Davidson
for the standard pin, chips, shirt |
I took a ride through town and then over to the
giant ore docks this one was in operation until 2012. railroad cars moved out on tracks at the top and dumped ore into the huge bins a ship moored alongside the dock was then loaded via chutes that lower on the side all by gravity alone They retired many ore cars on top of the dock as a heritage for future visitors You can see more information (click here) |
My next destination was the
Marquette Maritime Museum A small, interesting place with daily tours of a lighthouse (no tours today for some reason) By the front entrance, they have a very old torpedo and a monument to submarines lost during WWII Inside, they had many artifacts and books and a large model of the area loading ore onto a ship the old way with a steam shovel and the newer way using the ore dock and gravity alone. Much quicker, easier. There are a number of lens sets from various lighthouses and the lighthouse itself which I could not visit today |
Lunch Time: I chose a place called L'Attitude because they have an outdoor patio right across the street from the lake I had a "Farmer's Delight" salad which has greens, goat soft cheese, dried cherries, candied walnuts, candied bacon, and some other stuff How can anything with candied bacon be bad? The weather was outstanding! |
Time head up the road again What a terrific ride, mostly along the lake Road was nice, traffic again light, and I was in no hurry |
I get ABC points for national parks, forests, etc Mostly, when I spot a sign it is back from the road and I am past it by the time I spot and react to it. This time, I was able to spot one soon enough to pull over and take a photo |
Munising is at the most
southern point of Lake Superior I stopped at the Post Office and mailed a box of acquired stuff home to lighten the load Then I went down and enjoyed walking around the shore There are cruises to some painted rocks along the shoreline of the lake People queued up to take the short cruise. There are bands of very dark sand on the bottom of the lake visible from the dock I am guessing that is iron ore powder from the 100 years of loading the ore in the area |
And so to settle in for the evening and catch up on my web publishing |
