Lake Michigan Trip Day 5 Thursday August 6, 2015

Today we continue east from Munising
and reach Sault Ste. Marie
Hoping to see the ships go through the Soo Locks

Places Visited Along The Way, Photos, and Notes
Munising, MI is at the most southern point of Lake Superior
The hotel was the most expensive this trip but the breakfast was less than spectacular
This is a nice ride through some very rural areas.
There are not many stop opportunities along the route.
So I bit the bullet and just rode straight through

Lets do the math: about 125 miles today,
speed limit 55, a smattering of small towns with reduced speeds

Have you ever sat in one place, one position for almost 2-1/2 hours?
The weather was very nice, a little cool, but clear and no wind

The traffic was extremely light
When there were more than 4 cars in sight counting both directions,
it felt like a traffic jam during rush hour

Up 'til the last 20-30 miles, the road was very flat
I was excited to see some rolling hills ahead in the cut through the trees
I did arrive safe and sound in Sault Ste. Marie
I wandered through the town and spotted, then visited the Museum Ship Valley Camp

I met a fellow outside the museum and we got to talking
He's from New York, having immigrated from Korea 42 years ago
He has a daughter who lives in Pacifica
I asked him if knew about the Gorilla Barbecue
His face lit up and said how he eats too much when he visits his daughter
I took his picture and he took mine, but declined to appear on a web page

A couple ships were going by while I was at the Museum (more below)
It was time for a late lunch.
The Freighters Restaurant on Water Street, gotta be good, right?

Well it was good, just not great
The salad itself was very good, the muffins not so much
There is a very nice park at the Soo Locks
The difference in water level between Lake Superior and Lake Huron is 21 feet.

The locks allow ocean ships access to Lake Superior.  It is a very busy channel
However, while I was there, no ships were in sight.
The couple I saw earlier were my chance to watch the locks in operation and I missed it

There is a nice visitor center

As an important passage way, Homeland Security protects the locks
Downtown, tourist haven

What would a vacation be without a stop at a fudge shop?
Hotel: Best Western - Sault Ste Marie
What's this?  A whole day without a Harley-Davidson dealership?
