Today is planned to go from Wilmington, NC to Charleston, SC |
Places Visited Along The Way, Photos, and Notes |
Wilmington,
New Hanover County, NC Last afternoon I was searching for a motel and spotted two Best Westerns. One was about 10 miles further south than the other so I figured that would be 10 miles less I would have to go today. Wrongo! This part of Wilmington is on a peninsula. I had to backtrack 10 miles north before I could head on my was south. The day started out well in spite of the threatening dark clouds I actually counted three drops of rain on the windshield Then the skies relented and became much more friendly |
With all my planning for this trip, I completely overlooked a
Harley dealer. Cruising on down the highway, there was an unexpected billboard for a dealer Beach House Harely-Davidson is in Shallotte, NC This dealership, adjacent to the highway, is pretty much in the middle of nowhere It even has its own highway intersection I saw no other sign of Shallotte |
The highways today are very slow. Much of the way is 45,
50, 55 speed limits And about every mile or so there is an intersection with a cross street and a traffic signal. Hard to make time while waiting at a red ligh. As I mentioned yesterday, fireworks stores are a big deal for South Carolina particularly near the North Carolina border Crossing the border, there was a convenient rest stop for photos |
North Myrtle Beach,
SC seems to be the little sibling of the main attraction However, everything there seems touristy. Brightly colored, mostly made of fiberglass, there are mini-golf courses of all descriptions, go-kart tracks, water slides, alligator zoos, waterfalls with every color water, everything you can imagine. I blew up the left photo to show the sign, fried balogna, seems appropriate! Harley Shop at the Beach 4002 Hwy 17 S is a sister shop of the one below. However, as such, it does not have collectable memorabilia of its own Too bad, I'd have bought stuff. |
Between North Myrtle Beach and
Myrtle Beach is a stretch on the ocean Many access points lead to the shore. Each has a boardwalk to the beach In this section there are huge homes. Most have their own boardwalk for beach access. The one here has a swimming pool with a waterfall disappearing over the edge so that from the patio, the pool seems endlessly connected to the ocean |
,
Horry County, South Carolina seems to be another carnival town The main attractions are the boardwalk I do not know if Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson has a real shop, but I found the little store on the boardwalk and spent money there. |
In
Georgetown,
SC I was able to find Georgetown County Justice Center 401 Cleland Street Took photos for my "G" county |
The weekday afternoon traffic in
Charleston, SC
is awful. The city has a number of bridges over the variaous rivers and channels The views would be beautiful if the traffic weren't bumper-to-bumper, stop-and-go Low Country Harley-Davidson 4707 Dorchester Road |
Hotel: Best Western Patriots Point is way below the standard for the BW franchise I would not want to stay here again. However, a bright spot: I called a nearby restaurant, Sticky Fingers RibHouse (sic) and they delivered a sampler of four types of barbeque ribs with fixin's. One flavor was very good, the other three were outstanding. Mmmmm! |
