Up the Pacific Coast Day 1 Thursday September 6, 2018

.

Today starts in San Jose, California
And finishes in Fort Bragg, California

Places Visited Along The Way, Photos, and Notes
This trip begins with two and a half days following
the same route as my step-brother, Jason, and I rode last year,
I headed out about 9:00.  Big Mistake
Traffic up CA-85 was impossible.  I-280 was even worse.
Around Belmont it started to lighten up a bit

I finally reached San Francisco and drove straight through

I did not know that some garages are certified Tesla body shops
Going up 19th, the fog was becoming evident.
Normally, you can see the Golden Gate Bridge towers from here
My first stop this morning was at the
Golden Gate Bridge Vista Point at the north end
The bridge was foggier at the south end than the north
fog partially obscuring even the lowest cross beam of the towers.

while resting and taking photos, a man from Florida stopped
to talk.  I love when that happens

some ladies were taking photos of one another by the lone sailor
they were apologentic about monopolizing the scene
I told them it was much more interesting with them in it
but they were too shy
over the bridge and through Mill Valley
There is still a detour so I had to go over Mt Talmalpias

But the road is so beautiful and only added a few miles
Highway-1 was closed last year
and I had to skirt Stinson Beach  not so now
A nice older woman was willing to take my photo

She did a great job

I noticed a bunch (7) of bikes and walked over to talk
These fellows {8 of them) were from Switzerland
You meet the nicest people, and some stand-offish Europeans too
I stopped in Point Reyes Station just to walk around

I visited here last year
In Bodega Bay I stopped at a tourist complex for lunch

I had a nice cup of clam chowder, tasted good

There was a whale bone on display.
I remember reading that ladies used to
use whale bones in their corsets
Ladies must have been much larger back then

What to do when you live in a place with nearly constant wind?
You sell kites, of course
Some years ago, I stayed in the Bodega Inn, good, altho not great
Jenner is a gas station with a convenience store
not much else

I did stop to fuel up
and forgot to get a ABCs photo for a "J" city
Point Arena for a sandwich

I had a sandwich here last year but forgot it was just so-so

This gas station looks like it might have been built in the '30s

When the road got away from the coast, it was actually very nice
I did notice that the pavement condition varies widely
depending on which county you're in
I rode through the town of Mendocino
but did not stop.  I was tired, close to the goal for the day
and had taken some nice photos there last year
End point for the night was Fort Bragg, CA
Best Western Vista Manor Lodge 1100 N Main St

Just north of town

I walked into town (about a mile) and had supper at Denny's.
Next time, maybe the burger joint
Ridden miles for the day 230
