Up the Pacific Coast Day 2 Friday September 7, 2018

Today starts in Fort Bragg, California
And finishes in Eureka, California
This is like going home, and home has memories

Places Visited Along The Way, Photos, and Notes
This is familiar territory for me.
I grew up in Eureka and always enjoy going back for a visit.
When I woke up in Fort Bragg, the day seemed bright and clear
Going over to breakfast, I found the bike covered in heavy dew

Oh, great!  I'll be starting out with a wet saddle

The early morning part of the ride was inland a bit
and absolutely gorgeous, but a bit chilling

This second shot was sort of backhand toward the rear
There are numerous state beach parks up the coast
This is good because there are many beautiful beaches
I guess it must be difficult to think up a name for each

This is "Seaside Beach"
I guess they wanted to differentiate from those beaches
that are not beside the sea
When I visited Westport last year, I took a lot of photos
Nothing seems to have changed,  click here to see more photos
The road turns inland and becomes wonderfully
twisty and greatly wooded, areas of redwoods,
coniferous, and deciduous
If it had only been a bit warmer, it would have been perfect
The town of Leggett is where I emerged to Highway-101

There is not too much in Leggett, but there is the Leggett Post Office

and a "world famous" market

I stopped in Garberville to take a photo for a "G" city

and to grab a bite to eat

The Eel Rive Cafe is great.  I had a tuna-melt
I love the highway leading north up Humboldt County
Wide, good pavement, light traffic

Heading up the road, I thought I had enough fuel to reach Eureka
But soon my blinky light warned otherwise

So I stopped to fuel up in Fortuna, 20 miles south of Eureka
In 1956, my family moved to Eureka, CA
My father went into business with two cousins
They ran a Mobil Gas truck terminal.
It had fuel pumps, a 60 ft scale,
a restaurant, and a 60 ft greese pit
(I assume the latter two were in no way related)

Well, one of the cousins sort of had his fingers in the till
and the truck terminal went under.
In the years since, no business has ever opened in the building

The owners gave it a new coat of rather drab paint
and are still trying to rent/lease/sell the place
At last, I arrived in Eureka
Redwood Harley-Davidson changed ownership about 3 months ago
It had previously changed ownership about two years ago
I'm told the owners did not get along
Eureka has always had a very bad time being afluent
a mall opened maybe twenty years ago
The interior hallway is a ghost town

looking both directions
Best Western Bay Shore Inn Garden View
has a set-apart section that surrounds a fabulous garden area
Last time I stayed here, the garden was full of rhoderdendrons
all in full bloom.  Beautiful.
There is a very large koi carp pond with wonderful fish
swimming around

There was also a wonderful sound of croaking frogs
adding to the ambiance.
The staff showed me some of the frogs, tiny, about 1-1/2 inches
The ride was very good.  Up the coast was wonderful.
I love the highways in Humboldt County
BUT, I am tired of being cold, damp, and fatigued
Looking forward and considering riding through Washington
in the even colder and rainy weather is causing
me to think about reconsidering my route.
More thoughts on this tomorrow
