Up the Pacific Coast Day 6 Tuesday September 11, 2018

Today starts in Roseburg, Oregon
And finishes in Eureka, California

Places Visited Along The Way, Photos, and Notes
My original plan was to head south through Redding and down I-5

But, that route is impassible due to the multiple forest fires and road closures.

This dictated that I head over to the coast and down US-101
Yesterday was a long day, late start and speed down the interstate

Today is also long, first third on interstate,

second third winding through forests,

and last third was coming down the coast, reversing
the first part of the route from
day 3
I got an early start from Roseburg, Oregon
I got on the freeway at exit 124

The day started with a solid overcast.  Down the road, the sun peaked through
All of today was cold.  Weatherman reported a below
average trend today and tomorrow.
It started out in the high 50's and never got above the low 60's
I got off the freeway at Grants Pass which is exit 58

66 non-stop miles
Grants Pass is the county seat of Josephine County
Of course, I had to get a photo for my "J" county letter

My sister, while in high school, had a '53 Chevy coupe
that she called Josephine.
I have no idea why, I guess she thought it was just a hoakie name
Next it was to Crescent City 83 miles twisting through the trees,
over the mountains, and skirting edges of rivers

Looks pretty, but still very cold
I stopped in Crescent City for lunch, fish tacos at a favorite restaurant

They have sea lions and some sculptures from crab pots
Starting down the coast, it was heavy fog
From Grants Pass over to the coast and down to about Klamath,
there is still a lot of road damage being repaired
from the very wet winter of a couple years ago.
Many one lane sections with flag people letting traffic go
first one way and then the other
I did not stop nor even hesitate in Klamath or Orick

just kept moving on.
There are a lot of people out in their large RVs or pulling trailers
that seem to think they own the road,
Going slowly up and down the hills on the winding roads,
mostly they ignore the turn-outs which would allow cars behind to pass
There was on particularly egregious fellow who refused to
allow the cars behind (I counted 12 and could not see the end)
even when there was a turnout that was over 3/4 of a mile long.
When we finally hit divided highway, as I passed,
I waved at him with a 20% hand wave.
Reaching Eureka, California at last at a little before 3:00
I considered whether to continue south to take some
miles off tomorrow's trek, but there is not a convenient
over-night place around 100 miles south of Eureka
All the good motels down the road were filled
Ridden miles for the day 240
