My Second Trek to the Midwest
Day 4, Wednesday, June 27, 2007

Portland, Oregon to Missoula, Montana

Day's Route Overview:
This is the start of the longest segment of my ride.  From Portland, Oregon on to Bloomington, Indiana in seven days.
This also a part of the ride I had been really looking forward to.
Riding along the Columbia River out through The Dalles, Oregon is spectacular.

Destination today was to have been the little town of Kellogg in Northern Idaho.
Unfortunately, there are nice motels in Spokane, Washington and in Missoula, Montana.
I found out that there are few if any in between.  The few I found were already full.
I had to keep going until I could find a place for the night.

The good news is that I am far ahead of schedule.  The bad news is that, boy am I bushed.

Planned 430 miles, actual 574 miles.

Starting out: Trip / Odometer / Time: 68.9 / 39,615 / 7:30 AM PDT

A nice visit with Heidi and Russ, Katy and the kids.  And then I'm off.  Lola regretfully gives up her nice, cozy garage.

Hood River County Courthouse 309 State Street Hood, River, Oregon 97031
Wasco County Courthouse
511 Washington St, The Dalles, Oregon 97058

I think Elmer Fudd must have named this county after his main adversary.  "Alright you little wasco!"

The Columbia River Gorge is beautiful and great to travel through.  I'm told that sometimes it can be quite windy, but this day was just fine.  I was having so much fun that a gentleman from the sheriff's department invited me to come back real soon and talk about 85 in a 65 zone.
Kennewick, Washington has a Harley dealer Rattlesnake Mountain Harley-Davidson
and I need a pin and perhaps a t-shirt 3305 W 19th Ave, Kennewick, Washington 99338, 509-735-9775
Open Tuesday thru Saturday, Shumateharleydavidson.com
Franklin County Washington has a Franklin County Sheriff office in Pasco, Washington
1015 N 5th Ave, Pasco, Washington 99301

I found the courthouse to be much more photogenic.

Then I took the photo of the post office in Pasco just to prove that I had been to Washington.

Spokane Valley, Washington has a Harley dealer Shumate Harley-Davidson and I need a pin
6815 E. Trent Ave, Spokane Valley, Washington 99212 Open Monday thru Saturday,

The Shumate Harley-Davidson dealer does sell other types of vehicles as well.
I guess you do what you gotta, but it somehow seems so shameful.

Note: this is now Lone Wolf Harley-Davidson at 19011 E Cataldo Ave

If I don't already have an Idaho State picture, Coeur D`Alene has a convenient Post Office
111 N 7th Street, Coeur D'Alene, Idaho 83814

It is one of those post offices in disguise.  There is no large sign to announce it's presence just a decal on the window.

Somewhere in Idaho, I spotted a friendly Wal-Mart.  As I was approaching, there was a ranger station for the Idaho Panhandle National Forest.  I get one point for a National Forest in my ABC's, so I got a photo.
The part of Idaho I'm crossing has no Harley-Davidson dealers.  I was planning on over-nighting  in the little town of Kellogg, Idaho.  When I got there, I wanted to continue on a bit.  Surely there are other motels along the interstate a few more miles down the road.

Wrong!  This was so remote an area that there is not another motel that looked habitable through the rest of the Idaho panhandle and well into Montana.

Cold, tired, and hungry, I had no choice but to continue barreling on.  It became dark and the area is rife with wildlife.  My fear was a wayward deer.  I fell in behind a big-rig and pace myself about 50 yards behind.  He ran interference for the deer and also provided a beacon that showed the road ahead indicating upcoming curves and places where slowing down was appropriate.

Final bed time was way too late and way too far.  It turned out I had to travel an extra 150 miles or so before I found a place to stay.  A long, long day.
