2014 Portland Trip Day 1 Monday July 21

.

This, the first day of the Portland trip is between
San Jose, CA and Eureka, CA
This is very familiar territory for me
I was born and grew up in Eureka

San Jose to Eureka -- 322 Miles
We have completed the first day of our trip.  In all, things went rather well.
This is the longest day mileage-wise and it is good to have it completed.
My butt is tired.  Either my saddle has lost some of its resiliance or my butt has.
Our bags were packed and we were ready to go.
And, ahead of schedule at that.  We hit the road at about quarter to nine

The weather is cool, but really nice as we head up I-280
Around Daly City it started to get really wet.  It downright rained all the way through San Francisco
With the city streets being anything but smooth and the traffic heavy, it could hardly have been less fun.

When we got to the Golden Gate, the towers were shrouded in mist.

In fact, until we got rather close, the northern tower could not be seen
There is a Starbuck's in Novato that we have stopped at a couple times before.
It seems to be about the right distance.
In Cloverdale, we stopped for lunch at the World Famous Hamburger Ranch & Bar-B-Que
It was very good.  They give customers post cards to be mailed back from all sorts of far off places.
These are then pinned to the wall all over the interior.
On the table there are five squeeze bottles:  standard mustard and catsup
two kinds of barbeque sauce, each better than the other, and a terrific honey-mustard.
Ukiah
Mendocino County Complex I need an "M" county letter

I had hoped to stop by Gunnink`s Harley-Davidson new owners, need pin, chips, shirt.  Alas, they are closed on Mondays
Maybe on the way home.
We stopped in Willits for a refreshing beverage and for a visit to a restroom.
Alas, employees only.  Okay, no access to facilities, no photo here!
A few miles up the road is Laytonville and we stopped for another chance at a w.c.

We had a coke and a cup of coffee.  The specials are writeen on an old car door.

In front of the place was a Model-A 4-door sedan excellently restored.

I am not sure about that CB antenna being original though.
We finally got to Eureka

and our reservation at Comfort Inn Humboldt Bay was no problem
For dinner, we decided on the "Bless My Soul Cafe"
Louisianna style food and decor

They have won all sorts of awards and offer customers all kinds of pepper sauce.
They have one that they make themselves that is great and SO VERY HOT!

When I was growing up in Eureka, the most exotic ethnic restaurants included Italian and American food.
We had absolutely no fast-food chain stores.  They thought the area was too poor.
Who would have thought that today with all sorts of offerings and a McD's or equivalent every mile or so?
