We toured the HD Plant in York, and the Gettysburg Battlefield |
York, PA to Martinsburg, WV - 95 miles |
Woke up in
York, PA and headed to the Harley-Davidson Motor Company, York Plant They assemble softails and touring bikes here Lola is a softail and Bela is a touring bike. They both may have been born here Took a tour through the factory, it was interesting and fun They are very automated and computerized |
We hit the road Many of the trees are in full bloom. Often we are cascaded with a snow of white blossoms. |
Our route took us through a lot of little towns. Stopped in one, New Oxford, for a bite in a little cafe On the side walls there were many tin plaques and framed little posters Many of the frames held fruit-box end labels from California The center of New Oxford is a round-about. Two highways converge. New Oxford has several buildings from the 1700's. Seems strange now to call it "new". |
On the near side of
Gettysburg, PA
there is a HD dealer
Battlefield Harley-Davidson of Gettysburg Like many, they do not have their name proudly displayed on the building So I settled for a photo with their "Hog" |
Next headed to
Gettysburg National Military Park Explored the museum and took advantage of their show and diorama It was well done and very moving to hear the story. So many men gave so much. |
Forecast is for rain tomorrow and the sky looks like it is
getting prepared. Lots of little creeks run through this area. |
In
Chambersburg, PA
there is the
M & S Harley-Davidson So much history around in Pennsylvania. This is the 150th year anniversary of the burning of Chambersburg during the Civil War. They have a commemorative t-shirt for the event and now I do too. The bike is a little squirrelly sometimes and I had been wondering if the tire pressures were right Harley dealers take special care of bikers who are traveling. They checked the tires and I also had them pump up the air shocks. It seemed to ride better after that. |
Stopped in
Hagerstown MD
Washington County Courthouse for a county "W" This is an old town that shows its age It was difficult, but Carol was able to get the photo for me They do have a beautiful field of daffodils |
This is largely rural country with rich agriculture |
Today we started in Pennsylvania, then headed south through a little
arm of Maryland and down into an opposing little arm of West Virginia and finally into Virginia. |
Following a very busy freeway into
Martinsburg WV
for the night The photo doesn't show it clearly, but there were lots of trucks. I have long thought that having a slower speed limit for trucks in California is a bad idea. But since these eastern states do not, trucks are pretty much in all lanes. Very disconcerting. |
