2014 DC Trip Day 12 Sunday April 27

Today we Continue to Enjoy DC
We explored the Monuments
It was a long, long walk

Places Visited Photos, and Notes
Had breakfast again on the 17th floor of the hotel.

A nice buffet with meats, fruits, cereals, and COFFEE.  From there the views are impressive.

The Patomac River and in the distance the National Cathedral
From the Hotel it is a couple blocks walk to the Metro
On the way is the Arlingotn Temple, United Methodist Church
Interesting enough, they have a gasoline station on the ground level.

Probably more profitable than the collection plate.
The Metro is a super-easy way to get around
if you happen to be near a station and a station is near where you want to go
Fortunately, we meet both criteria

There is a long, long escalator because the trains run far underground
One cannot visit Washington DC without seeing The Washington Memorial
It is currently closed for renovation of something or another so you can't get very near, but it is still beautiful.
From the Washington Monument, you can see The White House in the distance
They are busy building an African American History Museum scheduled for completion 2015
I think the World War II Memorial is the largest of all the monuments

At each of the war monuments it reflects on the high cost.

It may be argued that World War II was the last war for which the cost can be justified.
At one point a bunch of Segways rolled past.  A guided group.

Seems to me to be very practical.  At this point my feet were not happy campers and the day was yet young.
The Korean War Veterans Memorial is a bunch of soldiers slogging through the terrain

The reflections off the granite wall makes for  a very effective ghostly effect

Political restrictions and unsatisfying endings make the cost questionably high.
The Lincoln Memorial

This is where Martin Luther King, Jr. stood and this is what he saw (minus the civil rights supporting crowds)
Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the Vietnam Women`s Memorial
Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial
The Jefferson Memorial from a distance.  It was just too long a walk to get there.
A statue of John Paul Jones
The Department of Commerce part of which is the Environmental Protection Agency
Final exploration of the day was the National Museum of American History

There is a special exhibit about a Halocaust survivor and her struggle to immigrate to the US.
There were several artifacts discovered after her death including her purse full of papers.

On the way to dinner tonight we came upon a plaque along side the curb
This is the garage inside of which "Deep Throat" met with Bob Woodward to expose Watergate

History is everywhere you look in this town.
The luck with Holiday Inn Rosslyn @ Key Bridge did not improve.
Although they did give us one packet of regular coffee at the front desk last evening,
this morning we noticed there were no cups for the coffee, only the clear plastic glasses.
When we called to the front desk, they said housekeeping does not open until 8:00 and would we like to order room service.

I am finding it very difficult to publish these pages because the wifi is very spotty.
At times it is very speedy, the next moment it might not respond at all.  Frustrating.

Tonight, about 80 highschool students checked in for the week
They are from Orange County California and like normal teenagers are very active.  The wifi is saturated and then some.
I am not looking forward to the buffet breakfast in the morning.
