Waking up in Charlottesville we ride thru Richmond |
Charlottesville, VA to Virginia Beach, VA - 164 miles |
Woke up in
Orange, VA and hit the road Pretty much were just headed east with a quick stop in the city of Henico for a photo of the Henico County sign, an "H" county Parked for the photo in the driveway. A cop car came by, saw what we were doing, waved and then continued on. |
Rode through
Richmond and past the
Virginia State Capitol It was about lunch time and the traffic was heavy A very old city center with added buildings too close and too tall |
As we were riding south on I-64, I started noticing signs for
Williamsburg. With all my hours of research and planning, I had not noticed that we would approach so near. My brother and sister visited many years ago and she said it was lots of fun So made an unexpected side trip. It is great. A must see. Notice my chaps. Was glad to have them on the bike in the cold weather. However, they made walking more enervating. But, as the years pass, they become increasingly difficult to take off and put back on. Horse carriages are everywhere. When we got to the wig store, we were turned away because we had not purchased a park pass. The apothocary was not open (sorry for the sideways photo) We had fun anyway. As we left, we stopped in a peanut shop with tons of samples. Mmmm Williamsburg is also the home of William and Mary University Due to the time of year, the local Barnes & Nobel was full of graduation knick-knacks |
Portsmouth, VA is just before Norfolk and
is the home of Bayside Harley-Davidson |
From Portsmouth to Norfolk is a miles-long bridge-tunnel-bridge As luck would have it, the camera batteries gave out as we approached. Did get one photo, though due to Carol's efforts Too bad, the bridge portions were essentially at water level and spectacular. As we rode through Norfolk, VA it was rush hour the traffic was very heavy and the road surfaces are attrocious so we did not sight see. |
First stop in
Virginia Beach, VA was the
Southside Harley-Davidson Naturally, I tithed with a shirt and pin and such |
I had reserved a non-ocean-view room at the Best Western Hotel,
significantly less expensive. The man at the front desk was a little brusk, but to our surprise, he booked us in a 7th floor room with a large patio door facing east (oceanward) and a small balcony. Very pretty. The beach is standard resort type, flat, well manicured and perfectly straight with a row of hotels as far as the eye can see in both directions. The hotel itself is badly out-dated, tiny, but the view. . . |
