2013 Calgary Trip Day 2 Sunday August 4

Today's segment of the Calgary trip is between
Eureka, CA and Florence, OR
This segment was planned for a total of 265 miles.

Places Visited Along The Way, Photos, and Notes
North from Eureka is truly beautiful.  The small towns, the trees, the coastal areas.

We covered 276 miles today and are in Florence as planned.

Eureka, CA (A)

We checked out of the Red Lion Inn and headed back into town
to pick up a photo of the Humboldt County Courthouse before we headed north

The morning was foggy and sometimes down on the deck and the windshield got a little damp
The fog was off and on the entire day, nearer the coast, more fog.

Orick

We stopped in Orick once before at a little diner that we thought was fun so we headed there for breakfast.

The food is good in a white-flour, midwestern sort of way.
Hearty and satisfying.  Eggs, pancakes, waffles, sausages, toast, etc.
There are few (1?) choices in Orick, but we will probably opt for something else next time thru here.

Trees of Mystery

This is always a mandatory stop along this way.
Good ole Paul and Babe are a must visit.

Who is that handsome man in the middle?

Crescent City

Del Norte County Courthouse

Brookings

This is the first little town in Oregon so I thought lets get an Oregon photo at the
Brookings Post Office.  Unfortunately, there was only a small sign with the town name.
With the bike in the sun and the sign in shadow, either the sign was too dark or the bike to light.

Oh well, we will have many more opportunities for an Oregon photo.

It is not a secret, but it rains a lot in Oregon
Lots of rain means lots of water
Lots of water needs a place to go, hence lots of rivers and therefore lots of bridges

Center: McCullough Memorial Bridge over Coos Bay, JNO North Bend, Oregon
Port Orford

We happened upon a little espresso and sandwich shop with pretty good food.

Florence (B)

Economy Inn Florence turns out to be in the very north part of town.  Who knew?
Old, but very adequate

We hit town and tried to eat at the Waterfront Depot Restaurant & Bar

but it was way over crowded and we did not have reservations.
Across the street is the Restobar owned by the same people and with the same menu
They do not take reservations and we were seated in five minutes
Our table happened to be immediately adjacent to the kitchen which was fortunate
because these chefs really busted their butts to prepare food for an unexpectedly large crowd.
The food is excellent!  Recommend highly.
