2013 Calgary Trip Day 4 Tuesday August 6

Today's segment of the Calgary trip is between
Astoria, OR and Port Angeles, WA
This segment was planned for a total of 241 miles.

Places Visited Along The Way, Photos, and Notes
Continuing north through Washington flirts with the coast, but is mainly through pine forests.

We covered 293 miles today and have arrived in Port Angeles as planned
We have ridden 1,116 miles thus far on this trip

Leaving Astoria (A), we headed north across the bridge.
The bridge deck is so high that the ramp up to it is a 360 degree circle about a city block in diameter
This is high enough for even the tallest sea-going vessel to pass beneath.
They are working on the bridge, removing rust and repainting I'm guessing
Before they can work, they install a cage of guy wires and netting to protect vehicles from falling stuff.

Once across the high end, the bridge continues at a level 15-20 feet above the water
In all, the bridge is about four miles long with most of that at this low level

At the most northern end, there is more clearance beneath for smaller vessels.

The first town in Washington is Chinook, soon after is Ilwaco

I visited the Ilwaco Post Office a few years ago and it has not changed all that much
Did you notice that the planned and actual miles were very different?
Well, heading north on US-101 can get you in trouble if you expect it to head north.
I blindly headed north and then found myself on a dead-end peninsula
We had to turn around and head back, thus adding time and miles to our day
Bummer!
Traveling north on US-101 in southern Washington has a lot of little towns

Washington, like Oregon does have an abundance of water
Now, if we can just get all Southern Californians to move up there...
We stopped in South Bend to get a photo for
Pacific County
When I was growing up in Eureka, they used to
cut down more trees in good weather so that
they could keep the saw mills busy in bad
when the woods were inaccessible

They were called coal decks
of course, the redwood trees were
much larger than these pines
A few miles off US-101 is a little town of Quinault
"Q" towns are fairly rare and I took the opportunity to get a photo at the
Quinault Post Office

As a bonus, Quinault is located in the Olympic National Forest
Forks is the town in Washington where the Twilight TV series was filmed.
Dissppointly, though, it is pretty much like any other schlocky little town
with the exception that paraphernalia, tours, and maps are advertised on nearly every little shop

The day was very long.  Washington seems to go on forever.
Then, within a few tens of miles of
Port Angeles (B) we went along the shore of Lake Crescent
The road along the shore is almost at water level and is very sinuous with a speed limit of 35 mph
Although beautiful, enough already.
Port Angeles (B)
We stayed at the
Red Lion Hotel Port Angeles and ate in their restaurant the Crabhouse
which, surprisingly, had few crab items on the menu. It was good, though.
