2013 Calgary Trip Day 7 Friday August 9

Today's segment of the Calgary trip is between
Abbotsford and Kamloops, BC
This segment is 180 miles.

Places Visited Along The Way, Photos, and Notes
We begin our route through the Canadian Rockies.
They certainly live up to their reputation for being remarkably beautiful
As we left Abbotsford the general landscape was agricultural.  Farms and corn fields and grain silos
Chilliwack is the home of Mountainview Harley-Davidson we stopped there for a t-shirt and dealer pin.
They had no poker chips

While we were there a RCMP officer drove up to trade his service vehicle for one that had been repaired.
We had a very friendly chat until his radio squawked and he had to go on business
We stopped in Hope to top off the gas tank before heading further

The road started to climb, gently now through forested hills

Soon the hills turned into mountains with the road following the river canyons
All the speed and distance markers were in kilometers
Lets see... what is 144 multiplied by 0.62

Then the road began to wind its way through rocky mountains

The town of Merritt rates itself as the Country Music Heart of Canada
The have murals on building walls and all aroun
d town are country music stars

We ate lunch in Brambles Bakery & Cafe Ltd.  It was quite good

After lunch, it was more mountains.  We climbed as high as 5,000 feet
On the east side of the highest point, the mountains changed dramatically.
No longer rocky crags, now they were covered with soil and sporadic trees.

At last we came to Kamloops (B).
The weather turned very hot, the mid 90's.  Not what we were expecting when we planned this trip
First stop was
Kamloops Harley-Davidson a t-shirt, a dealer pin and some poker chips

When we checked into the Days Inn Kamloops
the clerk mentioned a barbeque festival with live music down in the park
Once a year the local Rotary Club puts on a Ribfest and this weekend is this year's.
We headed down there to see what there was to see.

There were five champion barbeque cooks selling their wares. The lines at each were very long.
Since the proceeds go to support local youth activities, we ate there
They had beer, but the choices were limited to Bud and Bud Lite.
Carol asked for a white wine.
They reached into a bucket of ice and pulled out a bag with a spout and poured a glass.
Carol remarked "wine from an udder"  It was not good.
