2013 Calgary Trip Day 3 Monday August 5

Today's segment of the Calgary trip is between
Florence, OR and Astoria, OR
This segment was planned a total of 183 miles.

Places Visited Along The Way, Photos, and Notes
Continuing north along the Oregon coast.  Not the fastest road, but certainly one of the most beautiful.

We covered 195 miles today and have arrived in Astoria as planned
We have ridden 822 miles thus far on this trip

Florence (A)
Both times were visited Florence, we really enjoyed the old town section
We gassed up at the local Fred Meyers. It was the least expensive gas so far this trip

Heading up the road just before 9:00, the traffic was light and there were no RV's
The day started out foggy and cold and remained so until middle of the afternoon
as we got more inland and away from the coast.
We stopped long enough for a photo in the Siuslaw National Forest

Yachats
We stopped to have breakfast here just 24 miles up the road.
We had visited Yachats about 2 years ago and found this place. listed on the chalk board.
Not too crowded when we got there, but as we ate, many locals
came in and they got very, very busy

I had a bagel with some locally smoked lox, onion, tomato, capers, and herb cream cheese
Carol had warm cereal with local blueberries.  Look at the size of their standard tea cup.

Leaving Yachats and throughout the rest of the day, the RV's must have awoken
and were very much in evidence the rest of the day.

Newport
is the county seat for Lincoln County so I took a photo of the Lincoln County Courthouse
DePoe Bay is a little town right on the ocean.  It is across the main street.
If a tsunami comes, they will be among the first to know.  It has a rich history

The parking restrictions seem just about right to me.

Seagulls everywhere are just the same
Did I mention that there is a lot of water in Oregon?
And therefore a lot of bridges
The Tillamook Air Museum
Tillamook has a large air museum in a blimp hanger just like to two small ones at Moffat Field

More photos and notes of the air museum are here:

Tillamook Cheese Factory
We stopped at the cheese factory and had a bite.  Of course, I had a grilled cheese sandwich.

More photos and notes of the cheese factory are here:

There are a large number of very small towns along the Oregon Coast.
Each epedent on tourism and each slowing the speed limit to 25 mph as we passed through.
This makes the going be very colorful, but also very slow.
Astoria (B)
The Astoria Bridge is beautiful.  It connects Oregon with Washington across
the mouth of the Columbia River.  It is very tall because ocean ships pass beneath it.

Because it is so high, you have to head south and up the circular ramp
back over the tops of the city to head north.

We ended the day with a sunset over the ocean outside the mouth of the Columbia River
In the foreground, you can see the Astoria Bridge.  In the distance, the fog over Washington State.
