2013 Calgary Trip Day 10 Monday August 12

Today's segment of the Calgary trip is
from Calgary to Innisfail, AB and then back
This out-and-back was about 150 miles.

Places Visited Along The Way, Photos, and Notes
We visit a world famous zoo and animal rescue park.
As we set out from Calgary (A) we stopped at the Calgary Harley-Davidson
It is also known as Shaganappi Motorsports and dabbles in other brands
There are two HD Dealers in Calgary, we stopped at the other one yesterday
This one is closed on Sundays

Just a quick stop for a t-shirt, a dealer pin, and some poker chips
And then we headed up Highway-2 to Innisfail (B)
Alberta is a very rich agricultural province
Large fields of wheat and barley.
We could not figure out what the yellow flowers are but they are pretty

Discovery Wildlife Park is a privately owned rescue center and animal park
The facilities are not lavish because funding is scarce,
but what they have is very cleverly designed and utilized

Going north on Hwy-2 has very little
signage.  Coming from the north
you can see this big sign.
I too the photo from inside the park
and then reversed it so it can be read

There is an entry building where
you pay your admittance
with a gift shop and a snack counter
There were some little animals
for little people

An iguana

The place is quite large and well tended
All the enclosures are large

The Siberian tigers were just relaxing

we could not figure out what type
of creature lives here

Most of the animals were being a bit
lazy, but this guy was playful

There was a bear show at 1:00
We were all waiting for it
Unfortunately, they do not allow photos
of the show
There was a lady who owns three bears
first is a 700 pound black bear
second is a 1,100 pounds
third is 1,300 pounds
She had each of them show off tricks
for us.  Very fun
These three bears have been in a large
number of movies and TV commercials
She mentioned about 20 movies
and TV Series
If you've seen a bear doing something
on TV or in the movies,
it was most likely one of these three

Most of the cages have a coin operated
machine with food for the animals

this little guy is begging to be fed

A couple of ostriches

These are reindeer

This is an elk
What magnificent antlers
still shedding their down tissue

I could not figure out the story for
this bald eagle
there is no roof on his enclosure

The young lady on the right asked
"don't they spit?"
the young lady on the left said
"Don't be silly only llamas spit."
No, there was not an incident
And then back to Calgary (C) to brace ourselves for an early start tomorrow
On the way south we met our first rain of the trip but only about 5 minutes and light
