2013 Calgary Trip Day 11 Tuesday August 13

Today's segment of the Calgary trip is between
Calgary, AB and Shelby, MT
This segment is a total of 233 miles
This is our return to the United States as we head South.

Places Visited Along The Way, Photos, and Notes
We bade a fond farewell to Calgary and Canada.
Headed south across the border into Montana
In one way, we are not sad to see the last of Calgary, AB (A)
The Days Inn - Calgary South is not a good place to stay
The room although very large, lacked air.
It felt suffocating.  The hallways are even worse.
The attached restaurant is terrible, so-so food but SLOW service
Last night, it took 19 minutes after we ordered before salads came
After complaining, over 20 minutes later, our main courses.
The motel is located in an area with no other food options close by
We stopped in High River and tried a Tim Horton's
These are ubiquitous in Canada.
Kind of like a McDonald's with the addition of donuts.
Every one of these we've seen always had a long line at the drive-thru

As we started out in the morning, the sky was looking overcast
and forecasts were for thunder showers in the afternoon

The horizon was looking kind of dreary but when we got there, it was fog
We were fortunate to not get wet all day
although there were areas that did have standing water on the road from previous showers

Alberta is very agricultural.  Beautiful fields of grain

The town of Lethbridge is famous for two things
There is the Railroad Trestle Bridge which is over a mile long and over 350 feet high
and, for me, a HD dealership, the
Lethbridge Harley-Davidson
The last town heading south in Canada is Coutts, AB
We went through the border security screening
The only question they had was about some seeds Carol had bought at
Butchart Gardens
Fortunately, Butchart put a certification seal on the package which made it all good
The first town on the US immediate side of the border is Sweetgrass, MT
We fueled up here.  I don't know if gas is cheaper here or in Canada
I took a wrong turn and we inadvertently toured the town.
This town has no paved roads, but there is one motel
Shelby, MT (B) is the first town on this side of the border that has a decent motel
It is also a hub for the Burlington-Northern Railroad
So, for a town of 3,300 people has a lot of visiting workers
The
Comfort Inn - Shelby is such a nice contrast to the hotel in Calgary.
It is very nice.  It is also sold out.
