Today's segment of the Calgary trip is between
Idaho Falls and Meridian, ID
This segment was planned for a total of 276 miles with
a round-about route to go through the Craters of the Moon.

| With the exception of exploring a national
monument, today was another get-there-from-here day |
|
We headed out from
Idaho Falls (A) with an early start. First start was 60-some miles up the road at Arco This is very rural area and very agricultural 
 The Butte County Courthouse is located here 
 I also took a photo of the post office to prove I'd been in Idaho |

Idaho has the
Craters of the Moon National Monument about 20 miles
west of Arco This dictated our route rather than the shorter, faster interstate across Idaho This is an area with a long-extinct volcano that was gargantuan in size Lava flows, boulders crashing down, ash, gas filled lava shot into the air, solidifying and falling as porous rock Hundreds of acres of this stuff  We stopped in at the visitor center and then explored a hiking trail 
 
 
 The lava and ash from the volcano covers areas tens of miles away  |

Now we were heading west through the towns of
Carey and
Richfield But mostly through endless rural area 
 |
|
The little town of
Shoshone (B) lies on a main line for the railroad We stopped and had a little lunch at the Manhattan Cafe. While we were eating, two trains went by, one a freight with 2 locomotives at the head and one in the rear and the other was 7 locomotives all alone. They must be relocating some of them 
 |

Mountain Home is the county seat of Elmore County and has the picturesque old Elmore County Courthouse  |
From Mountain Home, it is about 55 miles to Meridian
 It was about 95 degrees and we stopped for some shade  |
|
We had planned on ending the day in
Meridian (C), but when selecting a motel to stay at we remembered that there are not all that many choices so we actually stopped in Boise but I did not change the map on this page |
