2013 Calgary Trip Day 3 Monday August 5

This is an Extra Page for Today's Adventures
The Tillamook Chhese Factory, Tillamook, OR
This was an anticipated stop, I wanted to stop here
Origin of those huge cheese bricks at Costco

The Tillamook County Creamery is a coop among the dairy farmers in the area
Although the television commercials depict it as rather rustic,
this is a modern cheese and ice cream factory in every way
and a very big operation

The parking lot is huge and very crowded.  This gave us a clue to what we would find inside

It was time for lunch so we stopped first in the cafe
It was mobbed.  Very, very long lines to order some food.
Then, onced we ordered, they estimated 30 minuts to be served.
Fortunately, it was much less than that.

You always see photos of jack-alopes at tourist stops
Here they have photos of trucks with huge bricks of cheese and tubs of ice cream.

In a self-guided tour, they have an upper floor from which you can see the operation
through windows overlooking the production lines

We were too late in the day to see the curding operations, but they were cutting up
huge blocks of aged cheese into various sizes for shipment to points of sale

Tillamook cheese is strictly kosher.
They have a rabbi that regularly comes by to certify the cheese and the operations
The reward for taking the factory tour is a counter where you can buy an ice cream cone

Emerging back down stairs, there is a tasting counter
where we tasted 8-10 of their cheeses.  Yum!
